Throw planning your agenda of things to do in Cozumel and that adds additional stress. So since we want to make sure that you have an easier time planning your trip to Cozumel we always love giving you some Cozumel travel tips. With this months blog we we want to focus on a big Cozumel event that takes place each year in May! That is the Rodeo de Lanchas Cozumel which is Cozumels biggest Deepsea Fishing Tournament in Cozumel!
Rodeo de Lanchas 2016 – Cozumel Fishing Tournament
There are plenty of great things to do in Cozumel which is what is great but also makes it hard to decide what to do in Cozumel during your vacation! Well since there are some many great Cozumel Tours(like our Cozumel Dune Buggy Tours) you really just need to narrow it down to your favorite kinds of activities. That being said sometimes during vacation what you might really want to check out are some of the great local Cozumel activities and events. May is no different and this weekend Cozumel is once again hosting the annual Rodeo de Lanchas Cozumel sport fishing tournament!
Each year Cozumel hosts the Rodeo de Lanchas Fishing tournament for all of you that truly love Sport Fishing! The fishing tournament is the largest in the area each year and brings in a huge amount of visitors from all over Mexico and even outside Mexico for the annual event. This is a strict tournament which comes with plenty of rules and also great prizes for the winners. With strict catch and release rules those officiating the tournament hope to encourage responsible catch and release and care for the marine environment.
This tournament is always very exciting and takes place over the weekend. This year will take place from 8am Saturday May 14 – Sunday May 15 at 6pm. Weighing the fish takes places at 4pm and goes until 6pm which is obviously one of the most exciting parts of the tournament unless you are competing in tournament yourself.
Last Year I was fortunate enough to see the winning crew and there catch right at the weigh-in on Saturday afternoon as I happened to be getting back from Playa del Carmen on a day with the family. They caught a huge 374 kilo Blue Marlin which netted the 37,400 points which was not including the white marlin they released earlier in the day which gave them an additional 2000 points for over 30,000 points more than the runner up. Very exciting tournament and if you enjoy fishing and spending some time together as a family there will be food and drink all around downtown Cozumel for the Fishing tournament so I suggest you check it out tomorrow and Sunday!
If you want to go on a morning Cozumel Dune Buggy Tour just let us know and we’ll have you back in time to check out the weigh-ins from the tournament tomorrow afternoon!;)
